You may not fully recognize it, but you have a problem. You earn less than you are worth. You worry about money, and you’re not feeling financially secure.

One year ago, I read a book that changed my thinking, then my life. “Overcoming Underearning” by Barbara Stanny is a masterpiece! In just 208 pages, she explains how your money beliefs impact your earning results.

Stanny is the daughter of Richard Bloch, cofounder of the famous H&R Block. Growing up, he had only one piece of advice for his daughter about money: “Don’t worry. You have a trust fund. Besides, a man will take care of you.”

She married a financial advisor who proceeded to spend most of her inheritance and rack up a million-dollar tax bill from illegal investments! Barbara Stanny had to work her way out of debt, because when she asked Daddy to bail her out, he said “No.” Probably the best thing he could have done. She’s gone on the build a life as an author, creating her own wealth. (Also: “Prince Charming Isn’t Coming” and “Secrets of Six-Figure Women”)

This year, my answers to the deep questions this book poses are better than last year. And so is my income. My rates have increased. And so has my business.

If you are in a job seeking mode, or just thinking about a change, her ideas are GOLD. I suggest you print this page, write these statements out by hand and read them often. Go beyond these and write affirmations like these that are even more meaningful to you:

  • I am confident about my ability to make money.
  • I always live below my means.
  • I love money and appreciate what it does for me.
  • I am very optimistic about my financial future.
  • I experience very little fear or insecurity around money.
  • I am determined to get paid what I am worth.
  • I am passionate about my work.

Yes, there’s that passion word again. If you don’t feel passion right now, be patient with yourself. You might be dealing with illness, anger, or family drama issues. When you do get the spark, move on it. Take a tiny step forward. Just this morning I found an advertisement for “Top Gun” trainers. Reading it, I felt the old surge of excitement of walking into a corporate training event, just knowing that it was going to be a great day. It took about 30 minutes to apply, but I did it.

If you’re ready to change your thinking about your career, I can help. My clients say they feel more confident once we have identified their strongest talents and developed their “brand.” I’m ready when you are.
